Adventures in furnishing

So Mike and I got a place (as I announced Saturday). Now comes the fun/stressful part of furnishing it.

Because when we were moving out of our apartment this April (the lease was up) and moving into a furnished sublet and we didn’t know where we would be living come fall (since it all depended on grad school acceptances) we sold most of our furniture. Of course, saying that makes it seem like we actually had a lot of furniture to sell. It was mostly desks, two bookshelves and a cruddy bed.

So now we are faced with the daunting task of furnishing a large condo by ourselves with next to no existing existing furniture. Right now the tally is 1 ikea desk and a somewhat broken futon.

We of course want (need) to be resourceful on account of still being in perma-student land, but we also are design geeks and don’t want the place to look like the inside of a thrift store.

We’ve been noticing that it’s very hip and cool now to have the 60s/70s style fiberglass chairs and we thought, “Hey, there are a ton of those around campus that are just sitting in heaps.” To make matters cooler, I just stumbled across two sites that I think will help us in our quest. Plastolux and Chairfag. I actually found the latter in a link from the former. Lots of modern style DIY plus how to refinish the nifty fiberglass chairs we just happened to come across.

I’ll post some photos later.

PS the chairs were made in Canada, which is think is super cool

Big adult decisions

Again life has gotten temporarily in the way of posting. I have a good reason though: Mike and I are now home owners!

(condo owners to be more precise)

It’s all happened very fast. We made an offer early Saturday afternoon and they accepted it late Saturday afternoon. Now we get to think of all the fun stuff like decorating and painting. We’re thinking about these things because that takes a little edge off the “HOLY COW WE ARE PROPERTY OWNERS?!”

And we went to a cat show on Saturday, not showing a cat, just to check it out. We’re cool like that.

Your a towel

Don't forget to bring a towel

Yes, I do realize that it should say “You’re a towel,” but it looks like the grammar police weren’t out that day. This is actually from Canada Day, I’ve been meaning to post it for a while. I think it’s just about the cutest piece of graffiti I have ever seen. It reminds me of something my friend Sandy would do (or even me, but alas I am not the culprit). This is just something to tide people over until the cooking extravaganza of tomorrow.

Top secret plans

It’s Mike’s birthday tomorrow and though the mood will be slightly dampened because we are sending our new kitty Kazue back to her breeder (because she’s sick and we’re not at a point where we can take care of a kitty that came to us sick), I’m looking forward to making the birthday as totally awesome as possible.

I have a lot to live up to because last year Mike through a surprise party for me, and did a darn good job too! I had no idea. Though that might be more a testament to my Facebook cluelessness. So this year I’m planning something big.

It involves lots of searching on Epicurious. I’ll make sure to post lots of photos tomorrow of the cooking process and the final results!

Long Hiatus

Sorry for the long hiatus. Mike and I have been going through some life difficulties lately, and the blog just didn’t make it into the to-do list for a while. Things are hopefully on the upswing though.

Goyza maker (courtesy of Gizmodo.com)

I actually saw this gadget last week on Gizmodo, but I didn’t have a chance to post it. It’s the Bandai Goyza Maker. Appropriately enough, we made dumplings yesterday. Of course, we are super hardcore and not only do we not have a fancy machine to fold them for us, we also make our own wrappers. Also, we  make jiao zi, not gyoza (I don’t think there’s really much of a difference, except that “jiao zi” is the Chinese word and “goyza” is the Japanese word)

On the upswing

So I still don’t have much interesting going on in my life apart from the cats. Luckily Kaswe (KAZ-way) seems to be doing better after the trip to the vet. She really does not enjoy her medicine though. I don’t blame her, it smells like a multivitamin and looks like it has the consistency of dish detergent. Mike and I are just that hardcore though, going with the liquid instead of the pill.

I’m sort of annoyed that the vet really dumbed it down and called it “diarrhea medicine”. Turns out it’s not medicine like Immodium, it’s actually an antibiotic. I’m not sure if I’d generally classify antibiotics as “diarrhea medicine”, but then, I’m quite sure that the vet isn’t used to talking to people who know the mechanisms of all of these drugs too. $200 later and we came out with information we already knew, and generic medication, three cans of cat food and some “Forti-flora” (basically the same as when a doctor tells you to eat yogurt after taking antibiotics – to replenish the “good” bacteria). Alas, the cat hospital is awesome, and I suppose that’s the premium we pay for the fancy service.

Kittens

So you may have noticed the distinct lack of posts since last Tuesday. This is due to the kitties, mostly the adult. She’s been having some GI tract issues. It’s terribly sad since she is the most beautiful cat ever. Plus the kitten has bitten two of her nipples so hard they’re almost infected :( But she’s going to the vet tomorrow so hopefully they will help us sort everything out.

Kittens today!

The kitties are currently on their way, so we will be getting them soon. Mike and I are super super excited. We went out and bought new litter today (after becoming a little scared after reading about the negatives of clay litter). We wanted to get the Arm and Hammer clumped corn litter, but unfortunately the store we went to didn’t carry it, so it’s the recycled newspaper stuff for now. We’ve used the corncob stuff before (but the non-clumping variety) and it was ok, but I found it tracked even more than the regular stuff. Of course, Mike wants to teach them how to use the toilet, so he keeps telling me that none of this will matter in a bit.

The only sad part is that my parents had sent us a nice little plant (instead of flowers) in condolence when Hebb died and I just found out that the species of plant that we received is toxic to cats. Yes, it is quite ironic. So we had to give it and one of my aloes away. We’re keeping one aloe (out of reach) because I burn myself rather frequently. Of course, I’m hoping this won’t be an issue, because none of my cats have ever been plant chewers before.

Exposure?

Sorry for the lack of updates over the weekend, I was visiting the family and celebrating my brother’s graduation. Though this evening I was compulsively checking Google Analytics (as I often do) and I was thinking, “wow, that’s quite the spike of activity I’ve had.” So upon further investigation, I realized that of all place, Moo supposedly linked to my post about the business cards. I feel quite awesome about this, though I would really love to know under what circumstances I was linked. If anyone has any idea, please let me know, because my curiosity is killing me.
