Stephen Gaeta has combined two of my loves, science and bold graphic design. And medicine. And humour. Ok, four of my loves. I’m of course biased towards the surgery one, but they’re all amazingly clever.
If you’re wondering what the neurologist is holding, that’s a queen’s square reflex hammer, the tomahawk ones are so out of fashion now.

AMI = Association of Medical Illustrators
I’m very excited about this since I’ve been doing scientific/medical illustrations for a while and for various clients and friends and now I’m a member of an organization that’s dedicated to the integrity of the art and the science.
The funny thing is that my grade 11 science teacher had me pegged to do medical illustration. I suppose now she can say that she was right all along.
I’m working on my own Christmas cards for this year and Mike suggested that it somehow include our two demons cats, Moo and Brenda. As a starting point, I whipped up these illustrations of the two of them in Illustrator.

Both of our cats are named after scientists. In this case, Susumu Tonegawa and Brenda Milner. Points if you know who either of these (should-be-famous) scientists and what they did.
Last year my Christmas cards were brain-themed, this year I’m branching out into the physical sciences. I’m currently taking orders for the cards (they’re 4 1/4 x 5 1/2″) printed on white card stock, and are blank on the inside.
I was commissioned to do a simple logo for a friend’s church. She came up with the idea and I cleaned it up and vectorified it (if that is indeed a word).
So I realize I don’t have any doodles, but I do finally have some photos of shirts I’ve designed in the last year. I haven’t cleaned them up to make them shiny and portfolio-worthy yet but here is a preview of the orientation week shirt from last year.
Today I bid goodbye to the awful white laminate countertop in both my kitchen and bathroom. I don’t know whose idea it was 20 years ago that thought that bright white counters on white cabinets with white-ish linoleum floors was a good idea. Maybe they just weren’t cooks, because I’m pretty sure that it you look at that counter it will stain.
But as of today no more! I really hope everything goes smoothly, I have no idea what goes into replacing a countertop, but luckily it doesn’t matter since this is one thing we’ve chosen not to DIY.
Yes, I am that person, the one who went at 5 to go wait in line for a new iPad. Well, it was closer to 6, but there was a line, though I didn’t actually have any problems getting one. The worst was waiting until the next day (post CV/Resp exam) to open it. It’s definitely a nice little piece of design, I can’t believe that there’s enough room inside it to actually be a minicomputer.
In non-ipad-gushing “news”, I’ve been working on lots of design stuff as of late (hence the lack of updates) and some fun kitchen and bathroom updates that I will post photos of!
On Design Sponge I saw this wonderful Ampersand ID Chart by Douglas Wilson. I. Must. Have. It. It is the perfect combination of my love of typography (and ampersands) and it’s a Snellen chart! (for checking vision)
Unfortunately it’s currently sold out, but I supposed I’ll just have to keep checking back or scour the internet to find one.
