Get off the screen!

The weather has finally been warm enough to have the windows open, unfortunately I was traumatized by Moo falling out the window last fall and still don’t trust the screens (though they’ve supposedly been repaired)

Moo on the screen

Moo is indeed a cat, not a rabbit, and his tail is short because of genetics, not anything that someone did

Onigiri

I think it may be the swanky new bento boxes I just got, but I had a craving for rice balls (otherwise known by “onigiri”). In my very simple vision, they are just a ball of sushi rice rolled into a ball, partly because I was feeling lazy and partly because I didn’t have any ingredients on hand.

Ingredients

  • Sushi rice (3 rice cooker cups dry)
  • Rice vinegar
  • White sugar

Directions

  1. Cook rice in rice cooker (I used a 1:1.5 rice:water ratio)
  2. Once the rice is done, stir in rice vinegar (maybe a couple tablespoons) and about a tablespoon of sugar. I’m actually just guessing on the measurements because I did it by taste.
  3. While the rice is still hot, scoop out some mounds (this I did mostly so the balls would all be roughly the same size)
  4. Wet your hands thoroughly and then form a mound into a ball. Rinse hands, repeat.

I didn’t fill mine, but supposedly filling is the way to go, a much better set of instructions can be found at Just Bento (I actually found this after I made mine, but the site is pretty cool and has a ton of great lunch ideas to boot)

Fossils

So you may have realized that after less than a week, I fell off the bus as far as getting a doodle up a day. I have a legitimate excuse, I went away for the Canada Day weekend and there was no phone service, let alone internet. But fret not, I have retroactive doodles!

Sunday

I didn’t find this fossil myself (as the place where I was, you’re not allowed to take the fossils home with you) but this one is at least from around there!

Campfires and fireflies

Saturday

Both Friday and Saturday we had campfires. I love campfires. It might be just a touch of the pyromania, but the warmth, smell and marshmallows don’t hurt either. We didn’t actually hunt for any fireflies, but we didn’t need to since the forest was lit up with them.

I’ve also started experimenting with Adobe Ideas for my doodles. I was using Sketchbook Express last week. They’re both pretty cool, Sketchbook express having the benefit of being free, but Ideas is vector-based, which has it’s pros and cons (pro being you can zoom in forever, con being that it definitely feels more like computer drawing than Sketchbook).

Happy Canada Day

Canada Day was spent driving down dirt roads (and I use the word “road” liberally) to get from my parents camp (“cottage” as it would be known in the rest of the world) to Fundy National Park. After a hike where Mike and I almost got lost within 200m from civilization and partaking in some awesome Canada Day educational activities, we tried three times to get some sticky buns before we were finally successful. For those not in the know, Alma sticky buns are “world famous” (though I cannot substantiate these claims).

Vacation!

Thursday

Spent a majority of the day driving to my parents’ “camp” (cottage). So no real update, just a quick sketch of a skunk, since we saw one on the way here. A live on at that.

(I’ve actually never seen a live one, though I’ve seen many, many deceased ones)

Pizza party!

Tonight Mike and I were part of an awesome charity pizza making dinner. Mike made the dough, I made the salad and everyone made their own little mini pizzas. We also had cake that said “Happy Pizza Day”. It was a great evening and I thank other Mike (G) for putting it on and everyone else who showed up to help out. There’s nothing better in a hospital than fresh food (the Globe and Mail agrees).

I realize that this pizza doesn’t have cheese on it, it’s to make up for the ton of cheese we put on the pizzas we made tonight

Doodle-a-day: “beckoning”

So far Mike has been providing the prompts, where he gets the ideas, I’m no sure. Today’s prompt was to open a book to a random page, close your eyes and point, then doodle that word.

Today’s word: beckoning

(“lucky” cats are also known at beckoning cats)

Also, I just watched the premiere of Combat Hospital and it’s way better than I expected. A good show even. (my standards for hospital dramas are pretty high, they must stack up to Scrubs). Though I’m a little biased because it is set at a Canadian Forces base in Afganistan.

Negative space

So today’s doodle theme was negative space

I was inspired by my afternoon in nephrology. Turns out the kidneys are pretty cool, despite the general consensus from first and second year medical students.
